Compute is the missing piece.

Researcher at a desk thinking at his computer — representing the research computing gap Computing for Humanity exists to close.

Research computing shouldn't depend on your budget or your grant size — but for most researchers, it does. We exist to close that gap.

Computing for Humanity was founded in 2015 by Roy Chartier, inspired by watching cancer research stall for lack of computing power — and by a moment from the documentary Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies that stayed with him as a father. Genetics researcher Eric Schadt's observation that the cure for cancer lies in vast amounts of data convinced Roy that computing power itself — not just funding — was the missing piece.

What started as Cancer Computer became Computing for Humanity: a decade of processing hundreds of millions of compute hours, contributing capacity to international research grids, and placing recovered hardware with universities and hospitals across Canada and the U.S. That decade of work led to myresearchcloud.ca — CFH's nonprofit research cloud, and the most scalable expression yet of the same original idea: that no researcher should be blocked by the cost of computing.

Our Story

OUR MISSION

To accelerate discovery and strengthen the public good by providing equitable, nonprofit-driven compute resources to those with ideas but without institutional access.

Through myresearchcloud.ca, international distributed computing, and selectively contributed infrastructure, we turn limited budgets into real research progress.
