Computing for Humanity and ThinkOn Launch Canada’s First Nonprofit Research Cloud: myresearchcloud.ca
Ottawa, ON – October 2, 2025 – Computing for Humanity, a registered Canadian charity, in partnership with Think On Inc., Canada’s only homegrown, pure-play cloud service provider, today announced the official launch of myresearchcloud.ca, a nonprofit research cloud built exclusively for Canadian researchers and citizen scientists.
The platform provides free and affordable access to cloud computing resources — including CPU and GPU virtual machines, data storage, and secure access — with a mission to reduce barriers, accelerate discovery, and ensure that no researcher is left waiting for compute.
“Researchers across Canada face a critical challenge: access to compute capacity is often delayed, politicized, or out of reach for those without major institutional funding,” said Roy Chartier, Founder and Interim Executive Director of Computing for Humanity and myresearchcloud.ca. “With myresearchcloud.ca, we are leveling the playing field. By providing a sovereign, nonprofit alternative, we’re ensuring that innovation and discovery aren’t bottlenecked by lack of access.”
As part of the collaboration, ThinkOn is contributing its infrastructure expertise, secure data residency, and sovereign cloud capabilities, ensuring that all research data remains within Canadian jurisdiction and is protected from foreign regulatory reach.
“At ThinkOn, our purpose has always been to make data thrive in a safe, compliant, and Canadian-owned environment,” said Craig McLellan, Founder and CEO of Think On Inc. “Partnering with Computing for Humanity on myresearchcloud.ca extends this vision to the research community, empowering both academic institutions and citizen scientists with equitable access to world-class resources — right here in Canada.”
The first tranche of 200 free virtual machines is now open for application on myresearchcloud.ca, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Paid tiers are also available, ensuring sustainability and scalability for broader adoption.
